Changing Shifts

Changing Shifts

In the rays of the setting sun

Day is leaving and evening comes

A doe and fawn nibble a bit

As the animals change their shifts

The wind whispers through the trees

All the days of falling leaves

Slowly falling to the ground

The forest carpet a shade of brown

The coming of the starry night

Is pierced by coyote cries

And sparrows perch on their boughs

Silent and still on limbs somehow

And the moon rises high

Pearl white in the evening sky

And the night dwellers look to it

To light their way a little bit

Then there is the thrush

That rustles ‘round to awaken us

And the deer are there again

In the light as day begins
