Spinning

SLR

  Nations rise and nations fall,

Eras begin and eras end.

The world just keeps spinning,

Spinning through it all.

Is it a comfort or a discouragement?

Time ticks ever onward.

The earth spins heedlessly,

and the world moves on.

Sometimes I wish time would stand still,

That the earth would slow for a gentle rest,

And the world would breathe a collective sigh

Over what has become of it.

Do you think if we all halted

In our own pursuits and gazed about us

Reflectively, respectfully, regretfully,

Do you think we would act responsibly?

If we asked ourselves 'what have we done'

To help, to hinder, the earth, her people, our descendants?

So many things are blamed on 'society',

But who makes it what it is except ourselves?

Who makes the world what it is,

Save the people who reside there?

  • Comment from author about the poem: I constantly hear people complain about the state the world, the country, society is in. I feel that everyone (myself included) should take responsibility for our part in it. All the pollution, the 'all about me' attitude the pervades society. I could go on but you get the point. Everyone should do their part to make the world a better place. For ourselves but more importantly for our progeny.

A fine write SLR. I believe it's people that need changing, not society as a 'thing' in itself. So were they 'good old days' or 'bad old days'? And are in we 'good times' or 'bad times' at present? I think it can be a mix.

I agree. I think it depends on who you ask and on what day and what's going on in their lives at that time. Definitely a perspective kind of thing. Thanks for the great comment!

Tepo, I want you thank you again for your comment. Where I live a belt can be three things. One to hold your pants up. A shot of strong liquor. Or a punch in the face! So I DEFINITELY has to look up it's meaning over there! 🙂 🙂 🙂 so thank you for your complement and thank you for having me a new phrase to use on people over here!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I really connect with your message - I find really hard to stop just BE myself with trying. Maybe it's shame? Maybe it's ambition? I don't know but I'm thinking about it now 🙂

Most of all it reminds me of a line from a song called the "The Ultracheese", where the writer reflects lost friendships, past experiences, and the social context of them all. The line is

"Trust the politics to come along
when you were just trying to orbit
        the sun
when you were just about to be
        kind to someone
        'cause you had the chance"

Very thoughtful. It's so easy to simply disregard nature, not thinking of the floating island of trash in the ocean that grows a little every day, etc. Thanks for sharing.
