You're Safe

DafiaEislyn

Police sirens break the silence

"You're safe." They say

Disaster drills every month

"You're safe." They say

Never walk alone always go in groups of three

"You're safe." They say

Never go out at night always in the day

"You're safe." They say

but I wasn't safe

even though

I followed the rules

I was in a group

In the day

during school

while police sirens rang

yet here I am looking up at the sky, stars in my eyes

while they run away, strangers I've never met

fast forward a couple of days and nothing has changed

my gaze still filled with skies of a thousand years

the only difference

you stand over me, eyes filled with tears

yet you still say

the words I've dreaded from the beginning

"You're safe," you say

and nothings changed
