In New York City,
traffic jams and MTA delays,
running up hills,
catching my breath.
Ten minutes late again…
Sit in the back seat,
their eyes on me,
barely hear professor speak.
The city life,
a busy life,
a draining life.
Insomnia rules
and insanity too.
If I could hop on a train, bus or plane
escaping the city;
saving my sanity.
Take me to a forest
where flowers express their beauty
while trees stare in awe.
Bring me to the Great Plains
Where the grass caresses my ankles,
light breeze blowing kisses
to my cheek as I run.
Guide me to a river
Where I dip my bare feet
into gentle streams
watching waters
drift me away
into a dream of peace.

- Comment from author about the poem: I love my city, but sometimes, it can be exhausting. To balance work, school, and other activities is not that easy. Unfortunately, this is a common case. Many people tend to feel drain and tried from constantly working so hard. Whilst many assume NYC is a glamorous city, most areas are not. I come from what the "The Great Gatsby" refers to as the "Valley of Ashes". It's an area between Long Island and the borough of Manhattan according to the book. I really like the concept of "Valley of Ashes". Since I feel the Phoenix best represents me, I see myself rising from the ashes of New York and become something greater. Perchance this will be my next poem: the Phoenix.
