Trenched Hearts.

kevin browne

I'm going to catch this world before it falls
Even shake the wars up and start another one
When some time ago they built the Berlin wall
Crying in the misery of what it is we've done

Incidentally profound, lay dead beneath the ground
Trenched hearts wrote upon his lonely headstone
And in silence weeps a loss that was never found
Dying of a bullet hole, we heard his fading moan

The depth of death from within the hand grenade
Killed a roaming child, alone, scared and blind
Militant methods are second to none handmade
But there's something to remember I think you'll find

To make a loss a fight, in turn, the strength to win
And to dig the hell out of our living souls we filled
An army lay in waiting for the Queen to sin
On Flanders Field where our soldiers lay killed

"In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.".

"We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields".

"Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields".

I'd crease up the corners if I was in WW 1
I'd bend over backwards so the world can see
A dwelling of living somewhere with no one
Piloting danger with aircraft from overseas.

Rest upon our hearts for us the living ones
Our breath of fresh air, you braved it all
And, Belgium brings home the who have gone
Up in Heaven, they sang their song. 'Stand Tall'

They stood up to fight, they used up their might
We'll say our prayers and our wishes we'll keep
Medals galore it was for us they had to fight
We're so proud and can wipe away our weep.

A remembrance throughout the world we sealed
Poppy days surrounded by the mourning few
Killing for us until they knew we had healed
And a cross on those broken hearts who knew.

AH, Mr Hood. now I know who you are.

  • Fay Slimm.

Your way with words never ceases to amaze Kevin - this read brings tears to the eyes with the second world war and the sacrifices made then brought right into the open - - my favourite couplet used right at the end has to be "Killing for us until they knew we had healed
And a cross on those broken hearts who knew." A first rate write Kevin.

        Kevin,

        An amazing poem!
        You’ve captured the
        essence of the accounts
        I’ve heard about WWII
        from veterans!

        A great read!
        Thank you for sharing!
