William

Anasyil

Say goodbye to an army soldier

who was drafted into Vietnam

and was able to come home.

Say goodbye to a father of two

both his wife and children

grieve for his untimely death.

Say goodbye to a Christian man

who had dedicated his time to church

and devoted his heart to God.

Say goodbye to a cancer patient

he fought and stood his ground

yet it killed him in the end…

You watched me grew up in church…

You smiled every time we spoke…

You were a patient of mine,

always saying “I am proud of you,

I always have been proud.” …

I regret not speaking with you more.

I regret not sparing more time.

I regret not sharing my accomplishments.

I wish I had the chance

to tell you how amazing

you truly are...

But you are standing with God now.

One day, I will see you again

and then I can tell you

how amazing you truly are.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I have known this man for years. Since I was a little girl, I have always noticed how passionate he is about the church. As I got older, I became busier. I didn't have as much time as I use to for long conversations. Even when he came to my workplace as a patient, I could only speak with him for a few minutes per visit before having to go back to work. I really wished I could put my goals aside and just listen to him tell me his stories. Maybe I could have told him what my journey was like being a pre-med student and a writer. His funeral was just three days ago, and my heart is still heavy. When I walked up to the casket to see him, I just couldn't believe it. He was really gone. I tried telling myself this is just a nightmare, but it's real. It is all too real. I cried as a return to my seat. I am filled with regret. May you rest in peace William. I will see you again in the afterlife.
