Poets Personal Belongings to be Auctioned Online
Items belonging to the late Turkish poet and writer Nazim Hikmet are to be put in an online auction. The personal effects which were collected by the poet or made by him in prison were found by refuse pickers in the rubbish.
Kemal Sulker, a close personal friend of the poet, who exchanged correspondence with the poet for a number of years whilst he was serving his prison sentence had donated a significant proportion of his letters to a private school in Istanbul for their collection.
It would seem some parts of this collection were then sent for recycling which is where the letters were found.
Other items that will be included in the auction are a handwritten poem titled “Nikbinlik, notes that the poet wrote to his wife, a painting, necktie, silk scarf and a hand-made necklace.
There will also be a number of other items of literary interest included in the auction. However, the auction house believes that the pieces that will attract the most attention will be those linked to Nazim Hikmet. They have high hopes for “Nikbinlik” which they feel with be the highlight of the entire collection and is likely to attract much interest.
The famous hat of Süleyman Demirel, the former president of Turkey is also one of the items in the online auction. The auction began on 14thJune and will run until 11pm on 23rdJune
