Captives

Ernest Hemingway

Some came in chains
Unrepentant but tired.
Too tired but to stumble.
Thinking and hating were finished
Thinking and fighting were finished
Retreating and hoping were finished.
Cures thus a long campaign,
Making death easy.

This piece pierced my heart. The weary acceptance of circumstances resonates deeply, painting a vivid picture of endurance amidst hardships. There's a strong sense of finality yet intertwined with a subtle hint of relief. So stark, yet brilliant. It's the kind of poetry that leaves an indelible mark in your mind. Great piece for my literature homework.

Just finished my lit homework and this piece was extraordinary. The imagery of fatigue and acceptance is sad but powerful. It really nailed the grim reality that can come with defeat. Truly evocative, left me pondering.

Such a powerful depiction of fatigue and surrender.
