The Praying Mantis

Ogden Nash

 Next Poem

From whence arrived the praying mantis?
From outer space, or lost Atlantis?
glimpse the grin, green metal mug
at masks the pseudo-saintly bug,
Orthopterous, also carnivorous,
And faintly whisper, Lord deliver us.

Just came across this witty little poem about mantis. I love the way it mixes humor, curiosity, and a dash of fear of these fascinating creatures. So playful and well written! Gave me a good chuckle.

Just read this poem and wasn't all that impressed. The part about "green metal mug at masks the pseudo-saintly bug" felt a bit forced, really didn't resonate with me. I guess it's just not my style of poetry. No offense intended.
