The Mature Laurel

Cyprian Kamil Norwid

Only through solitary wars
Are future readers won;
You will neither dwell in halls
In the Temple of your choice,

Nor will own a private portal:
Someone will unlock the grille,
And what in life were wings
History may bring to heel ! ...

Today's screaming boasts
Which you take for trumpet blasts
Are votes being cast,
And silence - the ballot count.
