Flower in the Crannied Wall

Alfred Lord Tennyson

 Next Poem

Flower in the crannied wall,
I pluck you out of the crannies,
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand,
Little flower--but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, all in all,
I should know what God and man is.

I gotta say, I'm not a huge fan of this one. That saying about plucking the flower out of the crannies just missed the mark for me. I mean, it's just a little flower - trying to tie it to understanding "what God and man is", feels a bit of stretch to me. I usually enjoy reading poems, but this one didn't really resonate.
