into the haze

dusk arising

as if in homage
he paused now, mind wandering
from the high cliffs over north shore
battered and wind blown
where brambles and wind stooped trees
are todays companions
here, as children they'd first met,
in kite flying delight,

staring fixedly
into the haze of sky meeting sea
where a visionary land has townships
of 'what could have beens'
'.....what should have been'
to their happy home of many years
before each mornings waking
thieved from his dreams

looking down
over stained blue fingers
memories return
the black september berries
had been early that year too
full and ripe from blazing summer's gaze
unfulfilled
young love so tragically taken

  • Comment from author about the poem: I always pick blackberries in september. Strangely, ripe ones arrived in late july this year. I like to put them into a pie or a crumble or two but this year i am on a post-op diet so, carefully frozen, the ripe beauties which grow in my hedgerow will be preserved and hopefully enjoyed in healthier times. Peacefully collecting wild fruits i often reflect back on past harvesting.\\\\r\\\\n

We used to go blackberry picking, we even found a path where we could pick plums as well, that has now all passed, but the memories are always there.

I always had an eye for places to gather natures fruits. Of course the vale of Evesham is plum rich isn't it.... Victoria's. You must get out and gather some blackberries sir! Surprise her ladyship with a crumble cooked by you (cheat crumble mix is available at supermarket if your not a cook) with some slurrpy custard or ice cream.

Thank you for your advice da, I have been cooking for over 60 years, it is another of my passions.

Yes the Vale of Evesham is plum rich and the local farm shop that I use has just got Victorias in, they are wonderful.

We still pick and - yes - they are so early this year - in fact there are now few left to pick round here and it's not even September yet. This is yet another example of your super work .

Thank you very much ME. I must get out for a second harvest before they drop.

We were picking wild berries the other day.
Apple and blackberry pie baked and eaten!

I always enjoy nature's metaphors and how the seasons can ignite reminiscing
