Tune: Camberwell
(one tune to 'At the name of Jesus')
Psalm 124
********
If the LORD had not been
On our side, it seen
That the enemy would
Do all that it could
To defeat us, up rise
Our lives as their prize
If the LORD had not been
On our side, it seen
They would have swallowed us
Up, it would be thus
Taken us alive sure
And their wrath outpour
Then the waters would flow
Overwhelm us so
The stream sweep o'er our soul
And take heavy toll
For then the proud waters
Over sons, daughters
Would have us overflowed
Threatened our abode
But blessed be the LORD, who
Has helped us anew
Has not given us to
Them evil us do
They shall not us consume
Nor cause fear or gloom
Our soul is escaped now
Through the LORD, 'tis how
As a bird from the snare
Out of trap does fare
Traps that fowler have laid
Evil deeds repaid
For the snare is broken
We are escaped then
Freedom, light, and victory
Here for all to see
Our help is in the name
Of the LORD, the same
He who made heaven, earth
Praise, give Him His worth

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 6565 6565 metre. I let the poem stand as it is, without going into controversies of whose 'side' God is on. I wanted to capture especially the image of us as birds escaping from a snare that has been broken, and being saved from 'floods' of enemy oppressions.

God is on our side.
Thank Pauly.
Fine write - but which side?
Erm yes, I know - what to do if BOTH sides say 'God is on OUR side?'
Meanwhile, I'm concerned with which came first - the chicken or the egg? Ask Miss Berles. She will know!
I really like that you deviated from your usual tone. It's an absolute contrast from your usual material, and I gotta say I find it to be fairly good ;D
You know me, though. Fan of the darker stuff hehehehe.
But all jokes aside I did enjoy the difference in attitude and the way you addressed it.
Thanks N. Oohh, but I been singing for ages - no difference there. I Know people can't tell if it's two cats fighting or not, but still! I'm a spoilsport, to dilute dark themes - I suggest with darker poems that we sit down with a cuppa tea and nice slice of cake. if only the outcome was that simple......heehee..
Different opinions will evoke throughout this poem. I'll sit on the fence and when God gives me the nod I'll know which side to stand on. Outstanding and provoking work here, orchidee. Well done for letting us know how to entice us into making the right decision to please the Lord.
Thanks Kevin. It's a bit more controversial than, for example, God is on our football team's side. Depends what team He supports maybe?! doh!
Stick with the fence then.
Amen.
Thanks Gold. I started off saying I was not 'entering into any correspondence', as it were, about 'sides'. But I have done so a bit in some replies. The alternative of Him not with us is surely terrible. He won't be on the side of evil, we can be assured.
