My Smile

My Smile

My smile is a light to brighten the day   My smile breaks the ice when there’s no words to say

My smile is a banner revealing intent   And letting you know how much my soul has been spent

My smile can bring comfort, or solace and joy   It beams ear to ear, and can sometimes seem coy.

But my smile most of all is a fortress of stone   Protecting the real me, my own flesh and bone.

It keeps you at bay, at arms length, not too close   A place where I pray that the truth be exposed.

A smile can be lovely, a sight to behold   But for me a smile is a mask that covers tragedies untold.

Sometimes a smile is just a smile   But other times it’s a cloak, hiding heart breaking trials.

WELCOME RICKY ~ Thanks for sharing your first Poem. Elegantly penned in Rhyming Couplets. We can all relate because we all smile ~ sometime ! Your opening triplet informs us that that A SMILE can brighten the day and break the ice. IT can be a revealing banner. IT can bring Comfort ~ Solace ~ Joy ! Then you go on to say your SMILE can be excluding ~ keeping us at bay. It can look lovely ~ but it is also a MASK ~ a CLOAK ~ to hide heartache. Your poem makes me question my own smile ~ is it sincere or cynical ? It also makes me more quizzical of the smiles of others ?
Can we really smile ~ when our heart is aching ~ smile when its nearly breaking ~ I wonder ? Thanks for sharing ~ yours BRIAN. Please check my site which I share with my Fiancee ANGELA ~ OK.
