Religion, a force for good they say.
Medieval curds and whey.
A mixture of promises threats and worse,
Blight on the world this ancient curse.
Comfort can be drawn in times of woe,
Of this I'm certain and indeed I know.
If only the good that does exist,
Had not been twisted to misfit.
Vicars, Bishop's shepherd and flock,
Have turned mankind into a fearing lot.
To say that the Lord watches all,
Seems to make no sense at all.
Sleeping, waking at all times,
A foot out of place an eternal crime.
And whilst I see a place for it,
I can't accept this hallowed writ.
Hitchens, Russell, Dawkins and Harris
Spinoza, Lucretius could of stopped the damage,
Now done it can never be repaired,
A shame as mankind could of been spared.

Very strong write Richard. Some people, including Ministers, do try to force religion down peoples throats. I believe that each individual will find their own way into a religion, or not, it is not what others tell you.
I believe in My Spirit and nothing will stop me from that belief but I will not force it on others to believe it, I write about it in my poems but as what I believe.
Indeed sir and thank you, I wrote this without the first thought of wanting to offend anyone, unfortunately in my experience the strongly religious (up to and including other groups of course) do tend to feel a god given right quite literally to stand on their soap boxes and claim that they are offended by such comments as posted in my poem. They are well within their rights to be offended just as I am to write how I see it 🙂 thanks for reading l, appreciate it
Religion did indeed evolve as a means of suppression - sadly it still does in many ways. My thoughts are very much with you on this subject being very much a realist (who is not far away - Market Harbotough). By the way your poetry is so good - I do hope ypu keep writing and participating here. There is a band of us who regularly swap comments form all sorts of viewpoints and thankfully we are all very tolerant of each others views especially on religion.
Hi Michael thank you so much, that was only my second ever poem, I've only been writing for four days and find that I like it immensely!! Yes we are rather close is proximity, unusual as most people seem to be from the US on here.
I'm not very pleased with some of my other work but its a learning process.
I will take a look at your work later and do hope to build a friendship with you.
Thanks Michael
Rich
Yes it is an American site although there seem to be more Brits among the most active. Not that I wish to be parochial - it's great to exchange comments and ideas with those across the pond - it makes it all the richer.
