Dueling Violins - Sonnet

Tamara Beryl Latham - The Poet

Dueling Violins (Yanni's Song) - Sonnet

1998 performance, "Live at the Acropolis"

Karen Briggs & Shahrdad Rohani (dueling violins)

Anticipating each half-note he brings

to life, her fingers stretch to find the grooves.

Perfection springs, as sound is bounced from strings,

then quickly as Baryshnikov she moves.

His chords a hurried sequence, devil's notes,

seduce her hand then challenge fast her bow

which glides across the bridge the music floats

beyond the Parthenon, but so few know -

this duo, he in black and she in red,

sleek racing cars, fine-tuned, pumped full with fuel

who drive life into wood that's long been dead,

while savoring each aspect of the duel.

Smooth liquid notes of eighths slake all who thirst,

resounding Grecians, once again, are first.

Yes, hodgetiger, I was certainly surprised.

I never referenced a video in the past, so I thought it may be the norm. 🙂

Thanks for sharing this TAMARA ! This sometimes happens with YOUTUBE it stops you copying it into your posting. I checked the original on YT and it is exactly as your Poem describes it ~ very evocative ! I especially loved the Pitzicato section a real duel indeed ! The ending was awesome thanks for caring & sharing. Yiurs as always BRIAN (UK)

Thank you for reading and offering feedback, Brian,

Yes, that performance was amazing and I believe it to be one of Yanni's best. I'm so glad I purchased that DVD. Did you know the song, "Aria" was also included on the DVD. That's the one that was used for the British Airways commercial.

You may be right about the copyright and YT,

I wish there were a way i could have included that video, so people on your site would have had the chance to hear it, but it's OK>

Brian, I know now, but I didn't realize your site is from the UK., but I'm glad to know that. 🙂

      Thanks, again Brian.

      Tamara,

An outstanding poem! Yanni is an all time favorite of mine!

“Smooth liquid notes of eighths slake
      all who thirst,
evincing Grecians, once again, are first.”

Superb words that convey the euphoric feeling experienced by a fan of Yanni’s music!

      I thoroughly enjoyed your poem!

Thank you, Laura, for your response and comments on the poem.

Yanni's appreciated more in Europe than the U.S., I believe, and I used the line about Grecians being first after visiting Greece and touring Olympiad, where the first Olympic games were held. I'm so happy you liked the poem. 🙂

The first of yours I've dived into and what a joy.Now I must look up Yannis song

        • Tamara Beryl Latham - The Poet

Michael, I have the DVD and the Youtube video was online at one point. I made an attempt to post that video link, but there was some copyright notice attached. Yanni is also the composer of "Aria," and this composition is absolutely beautiful and was used for the British Airways TV commercial.

Make certain you find the original 1998 version at the Acropolis. 🙂

Michael, I found it on Bing.

            • Tamara Beryl Latham - The Poet

Michael, I found another way to get the video.
              Go to Microsoft Edge
              then Bing
Type 1998 Live at the Acropolis, Dueling Violins, Karen Briggs and Rohani in the search bar

Then click on Videos at the top

A series of 4 photos show up on the top horizontal line
and there is a photo on the next line (second line) by itself of her in a red dress holding the violin close to her chin. Watch this video

The url of the page is really long

              https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=1998+Live+at+the+Acropolis%2c+Dueling+Violins%2c+Karen+Briggs+and+Rhohani&&view=detail&mid=4F3416897B6E6D97A0904F3416897B6E6D97A090&&FORM=VRDGAR'

If you could get this one and it's also on Bing under "All" instead of video on Page 2

You should be able to see either of the two.

The video has been pulled from the internet. Something to do with copyright. I bought the DVD on Amazon and there was also the song called "Aria" that is sung by two English women. This song was used for the British Airlines commercial. Check it out.

Aria - Make sure it's the daily motion video.

Yanni also wrote a song for his mother that was on that DVD titled Felitsa. This video is on the internet and was placed there when his mother died.

                Check it out.

                Yanni is a great composer.
