The Day After the Night Before.

Goldfinch60

Did that really happen last night?

Now that I am awake, was it all a dream?

Did I have too much to drink?

While I was standing, at the bar.

We only went out of interest,

My friend Norman, and I

To this club not far from us,

Just for a drink and a chat

A lady from the dance floor

Came to the bar between us

And ordered her drink.

Why between us we thought?

While Norman and she became

Engrossed in conversation

A second lady appeared,

And she too came between us.

She and I said nothing;

Just standing at the bar.

Then the odd word passed between us,

Until we too joined in conversation.

Norman and his lady went to dance;

We two, left at the bar went silent

Until she started to walk away;

I said “Shall we dance?”

I now awake from that night;

Alive, happy and hoping

That all that happened last night,

Was real.

It was! That day after the night before

Happened many years ago.

We have been together now;

From that day for the rest of our lives.

  • Comment from author about the poem: After Angela and Brian put up their poem yesterday about their first date I said I would put one up about Joyce and my first meeting. That was on 31st March 1981 and we got married on 7th November 1981.

    A fine write Gold. I though ya was gonna get tangled up with that elusive 'tomorrow' that never comes. When it gets here, it's 'today'. doh!

    • Goldfinch60

      Thank you Orchi. No today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday.

        PS: The day after the night before my brain hurt now since you threw me for a loop....wait that means today or "tomorrow"

        • Goldfinch60

          "Then the odd word passed between us". Yeah, it's pretty crazy to see just how small a chance can be for you to take it. Don't know until you leap, and hey, you leapt. I like the tone of the poem. At first it's a little melancholy, but then it shifts. Quite good.

          • Goldfinch60

            Thank you Nicholas, it is amazing what the odd word can do in life.

              "Smile at people - it confuses them"

              • Neville
