Tune & Hymn: 'Unto us a child is born'

Isaiah 11 v.1-4

*********

See the babe of Bethlehem

Of Jesse's rod the stem*

A shoot from Jesse's stock He

In accord, human birth it be

In accord, human birth it be

He a Branch, He shall fruit bear

We in His good graces share

Spirit of the Lord shall rest

Upon Him, He shall be blest

Upon Him, He shall be blest

The Spirit of wisdom sure

And understanding, it pure

Spirit of counsel and might

He approved in the Lord's sight

He approved in the Lord's sight

Spirit of knowledge and fear

Of the Lord, He does have here

He quick of understanding

In fear of the Lord, each thing

In fear of the Lord, each thing

He not judge by sight of eyes

What outward sight it implies

Nor reprove by what He hears

On His own, what first appears

On His own, what first appears

But shall judge with righteousness

Poor and meek He shall bless

Justice, equity shall be

The wicked smitten shall flee

The wicked smitten shall flee

* Verse 1: Christ is humanly descended from Jesse's line

(an Old Testament person).

He is described as a stem, shoot, and Branch of Jesse.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem, put in 7.7.7.7.7.metre. The metre may be slightly irregular in places. There's a part of Handel's Messiah with same title as the original hymn, or 'Unto us a child/boy is born'. I'm not about to write an adapted 'Messiah'. Me skills don't go that far!

    Good one once more Orchi.

We, in the Church Choir, sang the Halleujah chorus from the Messiah at our Carol Service last Sunday - it was a great success.

Oohh good, glad it went well Gold. Nothing much worse than if it was like a lead balloon!

Thanks M. Am I gardening, with these shoots, stems, and branches?

It's easier with a fork. I see the daffs are now above ground and I've got a lovely hellebore in bloom already. Now where are my boots?

Thanks B&A. Can I help? Erm, not sure what the 'rod' is, but Jesus is the Stem, and the Branch of Jesse's Rod - Jesse's descendant by His human birth. Stem and Branch are sort of the same thing.
That's the historical bit. You found out the spiritual bit - 'Jesus saves'. Bit baffling that hymn line - some may think - are we gardening?!
See ya in 5 minutes in NZ then! I'll only sing. You'll send me back home! lol.
