I do admire those who work,
I admired them so much
That back in ‘the day’ I got paid,
Paid to watch people work.
It was wonderful
Just watching them slave,
While I timed each job they did,
To see if they were efficient at their work.
Those days are behind me,
My work days are over,
Retirement is my way of life,
A glorious retirement.
I still admire them,
Those people who work,
Slaving away,
Day after day,
Earning their money,
Paying their tax,
And with that tax
I get paid,
As some of that money
Pays for my pension,
To make my retirement wonderful.

- Comment from author about the poem: At one time in my working life I was a Work Study Officer, ti was great to watch people working. I had never realised that Cleo Laine had sung this song, it is possibly the best version I have heard and I have heard it many times including on stage in the show Side by Side by Sondheim.

A fine write Gold. Yes, grateful - you and other retired folk have earned your living, contributed to society (and still do). Not that I'm that young. In fact I (we) are both extremely old. You must have got your pension first around 1100. Did William the Conqueror's Government first pay you?
Yes I did my forty seven years and one month without ever being out of work.
Well done! Why is that month important to emphasise? heehee.
To me it is important as that was my first month at work when I received the great sum of £30.00 for that month.
I am also grateful that I had a job defending against unmeritorious claims against our hard working medics. And now I am paid in my retirement - we are of the lucky generation Andy. Love Cleo - will listen to it later.
Yes Michael I too consider myself fortunate that I was never out of work, it was the lucky generation,
Thanks UNCLE ANDY ~ Love send in the Clowns (Politiciians ?) and for us Cleo Lane is the greatestUK Jazz Singer ever ! Have hearead Her & her Daughter & Grandaughter several times. A voice like Cleos is a blessed inheritance ~ AMEN ! We never think about RETIRING because it would be 2050 (if Planet Earth survives ?) at the earliest ! However you would have to drag us screaming from both our Jobs ! However we may both feel differenly when we are both 60+ ?
Thanks for sharing ~ Love in the SPIRIT ~
BRIAN & ANGELA 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Thank you A and B, yes Cleo has a wonderful voice.
You are both fortunate, as was I, in enjoying your jobs, your retirement is a long way off but if you think you are busy now you will be busier in retirement.
Some of those workers messed things up for me. The man made credit crunch messed up my retirement plans.
Never ever being afraid of work, i continue to work though past the retirement threshold and i shall continue to well into my seventies so long as i am physically able.
I enjoy my work very much but my knees and back complain.
I am sorry d a that things have not worked out well for you, as I have said I consider myself very fortunate to be able to work consistently for nearly fifty years paying my way as the years passed. I do hope that all will be well with you.
Andy,
Blessed it be that you’re in good health and have made it into your retirement years! You’ve paid your dues! Enjoy!
My love to Joyce and to be you!
~Laura~
Thank you Laura, yes I paid all my dues throughout my forty seven years and one months employment.
