But is it Poetry?

Goldfinch60

When people look at paintings where,

They don’t recognise the form,

The thought that comes from in them says;

“But is this really art?”

Can they not see the idea that

The artist tries to show?

Why don’t they open up their minds

And think of what they see.

So when I write words on the page

That neither rhyme nor scan

The thought may therefore come to some

“But is it poetry?”

A fine write Gold. yep, it is poetry. We don't have to torture ourselves as to whether it rhymes or not every time, though we may like iambic-wotsits (pentameters) etc!

  • Andrew Charles Forrest

    Great write G
I think people either want to see or they don't.
Want to listen or they won't
Some don't want to know where the poem the painting or the music comes from (LOVE The MD selection by the way) That would take investment of time and emotion,,, I think
Keep them coming we love them

Made me think of Dylan Thomas' 'A Letter To My Aunt' he captures the feeling wonderfully... I Think

      • Goldfinch60

I think many do not really see listen or read if it needs any thinking about, I am very keen in trying to find my pleasure in many firms if art and generally I am never disappointed.

I have apnearly all the Miles Davis albums.

Open mind, closed mind, half empty, half full. The loss is for those that won't see - great thoughts well expressed.

        • Goldfinch60

Thank you Michael, as you well know I am impressed with so many forms of art.

It always dismays me when i hear some twerp identify one artists work (usually a musician, or a bunch of them) as being 'the best'. How narrow minded and blinkered.
There are several genres of music, performance art and visual arts which do not appeal to me but one has to appreciate that others have a different and equally valid point of view.
Something i hate to hear is 'i hate jazz' from people who have no idea what jazz is.

            • Goldfinch60

So very true da, so many types of art but I (we) always give any form of art a chance, we may not look or hear it again but would not dismiss it out of hand.

I believe we should follow how we feel and let are hearts do the writing, not all great poetry needs to make sense or even be relatable there's just some art that grabs us eye deep and just click to our souls. great write, G.

              • Goldfinch60

Thank you Confia, I thoroughly agree with you.

This certainly is , a super poem at that. However a poet expresses is unique and if it is like this then it is awesome to read. Mine too us not professional, conventional, my wandering musing ah. Kudos.

I read an article recently about critics and poets it was the most absurd thing I've ever read but I love what you wrote it would shut the critic up. Good job

                  Thank you Joseph, much appreciated.

                • ANGELA & BRIAN

Hi UNCLE ANDY : Love Miles : great horn & great Jazz Classic one of our Favorite. Im trying to be a more COHERANT POET : wit a little help from BRIAN. My POEM for tomorrow "WELLINGTON" the capital of NZ : is a "Barrel Acrostic" but alas it does not follow Briab's strict syllabic rubric. However I am reminded that MODERN POETRY is sans : form or function or grammar etc it is simply WORDS : but not necessarily in the right order ! My only criteria for a POEM is that (like all Burns poems) it must be recitable and in the reciting give "pleasure" ! That usually demands a snippet of Rhyme & Rhythm & Reason !
Blessings & Love to you BOTH
                  ANGELA 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

                • Goldfinch60

Thank you Angela. My feeling about writing poetry is that it must convey feelings and for me to do it that way I find Tharp the ‘rules’ of writing poetry get in the way if my feelings. Andy

                • Fay Slimm.

Poetry exposes the heart and mind so all writings are poetry to those who look at its art dear Goldi

                  • Goldfinch60

                    So true Fay, thank you.
