Tune: Ach Gott Und Herr

('Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands')

Luke 2 v.25-35

For Candlemas - The Presentation of Christ in the Temple, aged 40 days

(Feb 2nd)

***********

Simeon of Christ prophesied

His wishes were not denied

Waiting for the consolation

Of Israel and each nation

The Spirit did to him reveal

He should see Christ, was God's will

Before this life he departed

This grace to him imparted

So coming to the Temple, there

He in a blessing did share

Mary, Joseph, and Jesus young

Words spoken, praise to Him sung

For Simeon did Jesus hold

'Nunc Dimittis' was then told

Lord, now let me, your servant, Lord

Depart, your word does accord

For my eyes have your salvation

Seen, Christ for every nation

You, O God, have prepare Him sure

Before all peoples face, pure

A light to lighten the Gentiles

No longer wait, no more whiles

And the glory of your people

Lord, he be to Israel all

Jesus' parents did wonder there

And more Simeon did share

Said to Mary, This child He be

Set to bring man's destiny

Set for the fall and rise again

Of many in Israel, then

He be a sign spoken against

By those who know no repents

This so the thoughts of many hearts

May be revealed, e'en deep parts

And a sword shall too Mary's soul

Pierce, suffering take its toll

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.7.8.7. metre. An occasion of a sort of Infant Dedication, rather than a Christening, practised in some churches in the present days. Original hymn goes back to 4th Century and St Ephraem the Syrian.

Thanks for KARYOKE HYMN Uncle Steve : Excellent. I was raised CATHOLIC and we do (in Faith) Baptise Infants and select GODPARENTS who will nurture their FAITH ! In the EVANGELICAL CHURCH (in the UK) where Brian & I attend (My Parents are Happy about that !) they DEDICATE and when a Person is converted they BAPTISE them by IMMERSION : AMEN. If we have Children : we will dedicate them : BUT we will also choose GODPARENTS for them OK ! Its 11 pm here. Tired after a DAY of SUN & FUN :

Thanks B&A. It baffles some folk, if they're expecting an Infant Christening, and it's a Dedication! Some Christenings are horrific - for the baby, dangled over water and splashed. Some are like pantomimes, where they just have the baby 'done', or as a naming ceremony.

      • ANGELA & BRIAN

Thanks Uncle Steve ~ Brian here ! Any Church Service in which a Baby is welcomed into the Church Family should be carried out with the same solemnity as would a Communion Service. In Evangelical Services ~ The Parents & Godparents are invited on to the Platform when the Pastor ~ Names & Dedicates the Child to GOD ! The Congregation agree to be part of the Spiritual Upbringing of the Child \"In the Fear & Admonition of the LORD !\" It is a big & solemn responsibility and should never denigrade into a PANTOMIME ! In our Church there is always a \"Bun Fight\" afterwards and then People can let their hair down. The same is true of Weddings & Funerals etc. We hace excellent internal Caterers which saves a lot especially on Wedding Receptions. The CHURCH is TT so we never have any punch-ups @ Weddings !
        Thanks for your comments ~

Is St' Ephraim the Syrian a mate of your's by any chance, or was he in the year above you at ye olde school?

        • orchidee

Thanks Neville. Yep, seeing as some of us on here are very old (me anyway) he was a school mate of mine - oohh around 315AD I reckon.

          • Michael Edwards

I remember him phoning for a helicopter back in 1066 - sadly it arrived too late.

            • Neville

Now then, what we seem to have here, is a clear case of folie a deux....

              • Michael Edwards

                La folie est une vertu

                • orchidee

Folie a deux (I googled it, I dunno these foreign phrases much). Folie est une vertu. Method in our madness?!

                  • Michael Edwards

Madness is a virtue - very few of us are so blessed - we belong to a select band Orchi.

                    • orchidee

Oh, doth none others understand us, carrying on in our merry madness? Dunno if Shakespeare wrote anything like this heehee.

                      • Michael Edwards

If he didn't he should have done.

                        • Neville

Just to set the record straight you guys....folie a deux.... is a clinical term used to describe the phenomenon of two individuals sharing the same delusional belief... only one have I ever encountered folie a trois.........cheers

                          • Michael Edwards

Ah - didn't know that - well you can make it twice now - I took it literally as the madness of two - right either way - lol

                            • Neville

Well done Michael... and I do mean that most sincerely ... as Hughie Green used to say.. only, I do mean it... N

                              • orchidee

Hughie wasn't sincere, we know. He was sort of creepy I think. lol.

                                • Neville

precisely.. that is why I added.. "only, I do mean it"... and I still do... cheers

                                  • orchidee

You're sincerer than Hughie! Who isn't?!

                                    • Neville

Bless ya squire & true... Neville

                                      • orchidee

Bit shifty he was; didn't like the look of him. lol.

                                        • Neville

not many did.. but there ya go there but for the grace etc etc...

                                          • orchidee

Well, I didn't know the 'other side' of Hughie until it all got reported. I quite liked him on telly in his shows, except he got all political at the end of one show, as if he was gonna start some uprising or summat.

                                            • Neville

no one knew the other side of him.... until afterwards... N

                                              • Michael Edwards

I think some might but we'd better not go there!

                                                • Neville

                                                  Better not....

                                                • Goldfinch60

                                                  Good one Orchi.

                                                  • orchidee

                                                    Thanks Gold.
