Self Harm

Neville

Self Harm

Aline wears each of her many scars with pride

Of course she has her favourites

But don’t we all

Those across her chest are special

Then there are those for her eyes only or eventually

A lover to admire

Each one is beautiful she recalls during psychotherapy

An aide memoire to mark each loss or hurt

She has endured

Aline tends to wear long sleeves these days

Particularly when her mother visits from Brazil

Self harm you see is frowned upon in Porto Alegre

….

Oohh the subject makes me shudder - and not out of swooniness (is that a word?). I came across some in a counselling group. I can understand why they do it though.

I dont think it features in any dictionary or thesaurus I have ever come across, but then who knows.. yes.. there are many reasons why people feel compelled resort to self injurious behaviour and of one form or another.. thank you sir for considering these words....

I know my singing may drive some to injurious pursuits, but what can one do? Lock me in a sound-proof room! The injuries are what they wish to do to me. heehee.

Oh Neville - - that telling last stanza goes right to the core of most issues of this tragic subject -- a read to set the heart breaking for such ones who resort to self-harm . A sad but true happening within
families and expressed with compassion in your posting today.

You are, as always so very, very kind.. and I do so look forward to your visits.. enjoy your day my dear friend, Neville

For those who have never experienced it either personally or within the family it's hard to understand but I do appreciate the trauma for those who do and this sad yet engaging write clearly brings it home. It's so easy to say 'get a grip' but that isn't the answer for those so sadly affected.

          • Neville

absolutely spot on Michael.. it is far too easy to make insensitive remarks, point a finger and arrive at way off the mark conclusions based on little more than assumptions, fears, ignorance and prejudices... thank you for visiting these words..... Neville

Having worked with poeple with substance missuse issues I have seen the affects of self harm Neville and I admire your bravery to bring such subjects to the fore.
Well expressed you captured the feeling harmers have for their condition well.
            Bravp again!

it seems we have more in common than just our scribbling then sir... many thank you's indeed... Neville

Shocker. You've brought to me a new appreciation of some aspects of self harming here. I had not been aware that the scars were worn with pride.
              Disturbing, revealing, educational.
What a gripping piece from you today.

              • Neville

I must quickly add my friend, that that does not apply to everyone, on the contrary, many people hide their scars and are ashamed by them and of themselves, there is no universal law regarding this, if there were, we could maybe solve the problem, before it got out of hand... a very complex and individual thing indeed, as are we all....thank you so much for visiting my words and your kind comments, Neville

I really like this. As someone who has gone through these issues...the fact you mention they are worn with pride...not many people understand why, or even how someone can do this. Thank you for highlighting it.

                  • Neville

Bless you my friend.. Neville x

It is such a hard thing to come to terms with, I came across it with a couple of Cadets when I was Chaplain to the Sea Cadets, all I could do was listen and hope that they would be able to see how to come to terms with it in their own way.

                    • Neville

Thank you for visiting these words Goldfinch60... much appreciated.. Neville
