Ready For His Return - Mark's Gospel (17)

orchidee

Tune: Rivaulx

('Father pf heaven, whose love profound')

Mark 13 v.32-37

*******

Watch be the word, and be ready

For day of Jesus' return, see

But of that day and of that hour

It not known within human power

Nor even the angels it know

Nor the Son Himself can it show

God the Father knows, he alone

Meanwhile let Christ-like deeds be sown

Take heed, Jesus says, Watch and pray

For you know not the night or day

Of my return, and not even

I as God's Son, I know not when

For the Son of man (Jesus) is as one

Taking a journey, when has done

When has given authority to

His servants, and each work to do

He too commanded gate-keeper

Of the house to watch, not confer

With distractions, for none does know

On earth when He again will show

'Tis in God the Father's own time

In His perfect reason and rhyme

Our part it is to watch and pray

Whether he return night or day

Or maybe at the morning light

Dawn or dusk, all shall see the sight

Lord help us watch that we sleep not

At your return, that be poor lot

But wakeful, alert, servants true

Continuing to honour you

So then not unexpectedly

Ready for your return shall be

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.8.8.8. metre. We don't know the day or hour. If Jesus says neither the angels, nor He Himself knows, how can we mere humans hope to know? Though men have tried to figure it out, it's ended in futility, no matter how wise they are or were.

we should be able to make a rough guess though if he managed to catch the number 11 from the co-op, surely..

Thanks N. Yes - which bus will it be? A bit like the Lottery, but never winning? - trying to guess the numbers. Some wag caught me out - they said he caught it from Aldi instead. That'll be the No. 15 bus then. Doh.
