Newspaper Chatting.

Goldfinch60

They sat at the table,

A couple of moderate years.

Coffee in front of them,

A newspaper before them,

Each of them.

They read, they looked up,

Looked up and chatted,

Then back to the paper.

Such an old fashioned sight,

Reading a newspaper

And then chatting to each other,

Not a mobile ’phone in sight.

  • Comment from author about the poem: People watching again. I wrote this in the coffee bar that we regularly frequent and gave it to the couple. When they left they came over and thanked me and shook my hand.

Bygone times. We collected our grandson from school yesterday and there were several waiting parents on their iphones. What were they doing? texting? Looking at the internet? I've no idea but how sad that they were totally oblivious and relied on their children finding them rather than looking out for their children. Sad times.

Yes a sign of the times Michael, will conversation between people be banned before long?

A fine write Gold. Yes, I can't recall any mobile phones in 1066 - can you?

a delightful little poem focusing upon what appears to be a universally declining relationship between two or more individuals, a pot of coffee and a newspaper.... Nicely penned... N

So true Neville, fewer and fewer people just sit and chat anymore, perhaps I am just old fashioned and prefer the old fashioned values. (Says he tapping away in his tablet!)

Ha.. I know what you mean... keep tapping..

I recall a voice from my youth, a strange voice from across the atlantic singing 'for times they are a changing'.
            And so it will continue.

Yes they certainly are d a, they certainly are a changing.

Thanks UNCLE ANDY ~ Love the song and its implicit meaning !
The Fobile Moan ~ of the Mobile Phone ~ has all but destroyed normal modes of normal Human Communication ! Ive never had one and never will. I don't even like STATIC PHONES ! However I do deplore the demise of Phone Boxes ~ especially as I won't have a MOB ~ on principle !
Love & Blessings to you BOTH ~

I can understand what you mean Brian but I could not be without a mobile 'phone nowadays, I had to have one when I was working in computing as I was working all over the country and had to be able to be contacted at all times.

THANKS UNCLE ANDY ~ Its the being able to be contacted AT ALL TIMES aspect that BUGS ME ! Gone is the peace and anonimity of days gone by ! However I do understand the commercila concept of having to be contacted AT ALL TIMES and in many cases it applies within extended Families etc. But of course it can lead to misuse & overuse etc.
Yours BRIAN ~ Please check our POEM ~ LOVE OF GOD ~ appearing shortly on a Computer near you !
