Sad Spike.

Goldfinch60

There it lay before me,

The unopened book,

What treasures did it hold.

Written by a funny man

It must be full of wit,

To raise a laugh from me.

I started to read the words,

The words of poetry

Written by this Goon,

And as I read I was drawn,

Drawn deeper into sadness,

As this man who made me laugh,

Made me cry.

Not tears of laughter,

But tears of despair.

There it lay before me,

The unopened book,

Now read throughout,

Showing how sad

That this man of humour

Had been in his life.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Some time ago I bought a book of Spike Milligan Poems called "Hidden Words" expecting to have a good laugh, I couldn't have been so wrong. Brilliant book though,.

A fine write Gold. We can't tell with some people - their private lives, etc.

Thanks Orchi, he did suffer from bipolar disease and was aware if it, even his friends did not know which Spike would turn up.

I've got an anthology of his but it's full of humour - truly inspirational to someone like me who writes so much light verse. I wasn't aware of this book - must look it up.

      • Goldfinch60

He was a very funny man but had bipolar disease which affected him quite seriously.

The phrase 'tears of a clown' comes to mind.
He has of course written some hilarious poetry too... one comes to mind about a tyre tread mark on a roadkill corpse.

Very true d a, he was very funny.

Next line in Dusk Arising's poem is 'when no ones around'
Very few get to know the comic behind the humorous mask.
          Thnx for sharing
