Tune: Albano
('Once, only once, and once for all')
John 12 v.1 - 8
********
Jesus did come to Bethany
Where Mary, Martha be
And Lazarus whom he had raised
From the dead, God be praised
Then Mary a pound of ointment
Took, and with no relent
Was spikenard of great expense
Yet she continued hence
Mary did Jesus' feet anoint
made there valuable point
And did His feet with her hair dry
She knew her Lord there nigh
The house was with the odour filled
Aroma not concealed
Judas Iscariot's protest
Was this done for the best?
For it could have been sold, and then
Given to poor, sure when
There was an opportunity
O'er ten months wage it be* (*300 pence = 300 denarii)
But He did not for the poor care
Nor did generous share
A thief he be with money box
In charge of key and lock
Jesus said, Do let her alone
For she did this, so known
Was He for day of burial
Anointed by her full
For the poor you do have always
With you through nights and days
And when you will, you good may do
Unto them, even you
But me, Jesus, you have not here
Always, I do appear
For a time ,then I go away
'Til resurrection day
Where'er the gospel shall be preached
To furthest corners reached
What she has done it shall be told
Her witness free and bold

Thanks : UNCLE STEVE : Great Tune & Challenging Poem. There are always those who "Have their hand in the BAG" even Churches have their share of KLEOPTOMANIACS and THIEVES as well ! It raises the question of the FIVE BILLION EUROS it will cost to Repair & Restore NOTRE DAME ? For us it would be better spent on ND than another NUCLEAR SUBMARINE !
BLESSINGS and a marrow bone for FIDO
Love in the Spirit : ANGELA & BRIAN 🧡🧡🧡🧡 + 🧡
Thanks B&A. Better still if it was given to the poor and needy? There's a strange thing - a thief as treasurer!
Hmm, and yet in building the Temple(s) in olden days, they contributed to that. King David gave of his personal riches too, for it 'must be exceeding magnifical' he said! Fido has a magnifical bark. Ahh, I saw an old terrier dog. The owner had an empty pushchair for the dog if it got tired! Fido said 'Very thoughtful, and where's my Rolls Royce?' Ooh he has ideas above his station.
I like the idea of aromatic anointing and can understand the reasons for it in hot lands and before fridges...
Thanks Neville. You being aromatic?!
I certainly am not being romantic..
You got that spikenard, or nard, N.? I dunno what it its exactly.
maybe tis your cocoa that been spiked n ard....
Aromatic sounds as it is - full of scented beauty and given with love it must be such a pleasure for the one who receives.
Thanks Fay.
Great write Miss Berles.
