Jelly Rolls Again.

Goldfinch60

Once again the smile was back,

Four guys sat there on the stage,

Four guys of “a certain age”.

The clarinet sounded,

The piano, banjo and drums came in

And that smile was on my face.

We were in for a wonderful evening,

A wonderful evening of Jazz.

The sounds of Jelly Roll permeated my world

And the world of those around me.

Such wonderful sounds

From four men who loved their Jazz.

You could see it in their faces,

Feel their souls coming through,

Coming through their sounds.

A so wonderful evening,

One that will be in my mind

And in my heart forever.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I went to the Jazz Club once more last night and a quartet were playing Jelly Roll Morton music. It is said that Jelly roll Morton invented Jazz, even if he did not he was there at the beginning.

Good write Gold. We were there at the beginning - well, at certain events anyway: 1066; meeting the (first?) men on the moon;etc. We were the first men on the moon!

    • Goldfinch60

We sure were and I told Jelly Roll that if you play a wrong note it is Jazz as it is the note that you wanted to play at that time.

Most musicians are not playing the music they love but its great when the musicians are playing the music they love. It tells doesn't it.

It certainly does d a, you could see it in the way they played and interacted. The pianist was playing for us before they were due to start, I could imagine him getting up each morning and going straight to his piano.
