Tune: St Stephen
('In Christ there is no east or west')
Based on a Formal Prayer
**********
Grant us, Lord, the courage we need
To change the things indeed
That we can change, and it be known
That good seeds there be sown
Grant us, Lord, your serenity
To accept things that be
That which we cannot change, and peace
Sure in our hearts release
And grant too wisdom, that we know
The difference, and show
What can be changed, and what cannot
Each ordained in its lot
Guard us that we not go ahead
Where we would be misled
Not taking courage, try to change
Things outside of our range
And guard that we not do nothing
Where we could a change bring
Not serene inactivity
Not stale dull apathy
So with your help your will be done
Through us, your kingdom come
Wisdom you will grant if we ask
To deal with life, each task

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. metre. I've made it a bit long-winded, in a sort of 'Help us to do what we can do, and help us not to do what we cannot do'. Clear as mud?!

The original hymn was our Primary School 'School Flagship Hymn' or sort of 'Motto Hymn'. So I've know it millions of years. Well, since 1066 anyway! lol.
words enjoyed whether poem, hymn or hymn poem... N
Thanks N - it's my name in the 'tune name' too, though I don't spell it with 'ph'. The 'Common Metre' of 8.6.8.6. today. Did it catch ya out?!
Good one O
Thanks M.
Thank you ORCHI
I'm not being lazy
I'me serenely innactive today!
Thanks A. lol. I tried to link part of the Formal Prayer 'Grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change' with 'Grant us courage to change the things we can change'. The other line of the Prayer is 'And grant us the wisdom to know the difference'.
Good write Orchi but He is not there for me and Joyce.
Thanks Gold.
