SPIN-BACK

Fay Slimm.

Spin-Back.

Numbed by first trickle of unbelief's fear
She knelt as that flow of pooling dark red
Discoloured grass, small circles like treacle
Were slowly congealing about his still head.

Silenced by shock she focused glazed eyes
A once sporty car lay pieced on hard ground
Spilling destruction  while her disturbed sight
Became fixed on one wheel still turning round.

Stunned by confusion a sudden spin-back
Revived her to hearing the moments before.
The tree halting speed with one piercing crash,
She knew his young heart was beating no more.

My thanks Nev for your comment on what has become a familiar occurrence on our roads and byways - -- hoping readers will relate to the need for control as many young drivers meet a sad end through thoughtless speed.

    • Lorna

It must have been a fast end from the violence of the car splitting in half.... something in me thinks that they were having a very exhilarating "rush" of excitement driving that fast......... and then nothing..... so as long as they didn't kill anyone else, they went to Valhalla having some fun. We're all here for such a short time - life is pretty meaningless really and death is a friend. You certainly caught the shock of the survivor.

Yes the outcome of tragedy like this often shocks survivors for the rest of their lives - thanks Lorna for your perceptive comment.

              • Fay Slimm.

Yes any survivor of a tragic car crash has to live with after-effects for many a decade. Thanks for your comment dear Suresh.

Taking speed from the car puts life into its inhabitants. When will people realize that there are safe speeds and reckless speeds?
Thanks Fay for bringing this tragic event to poetic fruition. I think your poem may serve to highlight the world-wide problem of auto safety.
