VOICES FOR CHOICES ~ BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH

ANGELA & BRIAN

THINGS WE CONSIDER ESSENTIAL ~ BUT WE DONT REALLY NEED !

If you did not have a CAR

You could still WALK

If you did not have  PHONE

You could still TALK

If you did not have a BATTER

Then the CRICKET would not matter

And you could still eat all your GREENS

Without a FORK !

You could have a great big TELLY

Without VISION

We could all live without CRIME

And without PRISON

Without DARK we*d just have LIGHT

Without LIGHT we*d just have NIGHT

An if we tried we could eat CAKES

That have not RISEN !

If we did not have CARTOONS

We*d all be FUNNY

And we*d probably be more EQUAL

Without MONEY

We could live without COMPUTERS

DICTATORS ~ PERSECUTORS

And our lives would still be SWEET

Without our HONEY !

But Im trying to make sure

No one FORGETS

That we really needed

MIGHTY SUFFRAGETTES*

If they did not raise their VOICES

Most of us would have no CHOICES

And I think that we*d have many

DEEP REGRETS !

Thanks for visiting ~ comments welcome ~ love A & B  🧡🧡🧡

In this POEM Benjamin is highlighting many things we consider

essential (cars ~ telephones ~ sports gear ~ TV) but in essence

we don*t really need.  He also mentions People like DICTATORS

& PERSECUTORS who make our lives a misery ! But there are also

essential People REFORMERS like the SUFFRAGETTES who over 100

Years ago campaigned for *VOTES FOR WOMEN* in the UK and now

we have had two Female Prime Ministers. Benjamin is a very famous

UK Poet who speaks out against all forms of SOCIAL INJUSTICE !

He is a Performance Poet so his poetry has great RHYME & RHYTHM

The Rhyme Pattern in this Poem is interesting & consistent throughout

all four verses !   x a x a b b x a   x indicates a non-rhyming line ~ and

a & b lines which rhyme. This is standard way to write Rhyme Patterns.

Thanks UNCLE MICHAEL : Pleased you enjoyed it : BRIAN & I think BZ should be Poet Laureate ! He sure would shake up the Establishment ! He really has a *Way with Words* and we love the Rhythm & Rhyme pattern in this one it complements the SUBJECT : Now that is POETRY !

If we did not have any ploughs, we could survive with the sweat of our brows.
Before we learnt to make the tools nature gave us all to survive. Tools took us on a different tragectory, and now we have become it slaves.

You have highlighted a strong poem

      • ANGELA & BRIAN

YES SURESH : A very strong Poem indeed ! BRIAN & I love BZ and hoped he would have become the NEW UK Poet Laureate ! We*ll have to wait another 10 years when He will just be in His Prime @ 71 ! The rot set in over 200 years ago with the Industrial Revolution and at the present rate by 2100 (I*ll be 117) most of PLANET EARTH will be uninhabitable and there really is NOWHERE ELSE (In the Solar System) to GO : OK ! BZ is a Vegan (we are NOT) but if we all were it would be a move in the right direction to reverse *Destruction of Planet Earth !* Thanks for a reasoned comment !

        Blessings & Peace & Joy

Yes we could be happy with little more than the basics should we choose. A read full of truths dear duo

        • ANGELA & BRIAN

THANKS FAY ~ Yes BZ is a contraversial POET ~ Vegan ~ Anti-establishment & Royalty etc but he does have a Point in this POEM ~ Back to basics ~ but is it rational or possible ?

          Blessings ~ Peace & Love

Some fine messages in your words. I would argue about the line

"Then the CRICKET would not matter"
          Cricket does matter.

          • ANGELA & BRIAN

Thanks UNCLE ANDY ~ As a proud LANCASTRIAN I agree ! I think what BZ is saying without the right equipment you have to forgo the Pleasure & Leisure of Sport. When I was at Grammar School (1994 ~ 1999) a full set of Cricket Gear ~ Bats ~ Balls ~ Wickets ~ Pads ~ Boots ~ Whites ~ Screens ~ Scoreboard etc etc ~ could (even with a little help from the Parents !) cost the School several thousands of Pounds. Cricket has to be done properly (in a Grammar / Public School context) or NOT at all. TODAY ~ sadly ~ many Secondary Schools are opting for the latter !

Blessings & Peace & Love to YOU & JOYCE
Yours as always ANGELA & BRIAN
