Paraclete Promise

Tune: Down Ampney

('Come down, O love divine')

John 14 v.23-27

*********

Christ said, If one loves me

He* will keep my words, see

And my Father and I will love him, both we

Shall come to him, abide

But the Spirit reside

Within his heart, and friendship with him confide

He that does not love me

Christ says that such they be

They who keep not His words, but act feignedly

The words are not Christ's own

But the Father's words shown

From whom none is hidden, to Him all hearts known

When Jesus would ascend

To Father, He would send

The Comforter, the Spirit, to us attend

Sent [to] us in Jesus' name

The Spirit, He the same

Helper, Paraclete**, of His help we may claim

He shall us all things teach

Deep things of God shall reach

Revealing all we need, showing unto each

Bring to our remembrance

Of our true inward sense

All things that He has said unto us from hence

He does leave with us peace

His peace that ne'er shall cease

Not as the world's peace, but peace with no decrease

Let not hearts troubled be

Nor fear, Christ ascends, see

To the Father, keeps promises faithfully

** I have used 'he' in places (lower case 'h'), but it can also be 'she'.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 6.6.11. 6.6.11. metre. I had a clip of people singing this, but to me they ruined it - sung out of step and gabbled it too quickly! Well, they had to get home in time for Sunday lunch I expect. Doh!

Paraclete is not connected to parakeet - unless you have a 'comforting' parakeet!

Trials and tribulations - maybe that's what love is all about
Trials and tribulations just do not seem to end, so we end up questioning everything

Thanks Suresh. 'Comfort' can mean 'solace' and 'strength' - in and through troubles.

thank you for setting the record straight... and I have just learnt a new word... cheers... Neville

Thanks N. Yep, not related to parakeets. Well, maybe it is, if the bird is comforting!

Christ says this then he says something else... or so you wrote today, do you know anyone who ever heard christ speak.... or are you repeating rumours? Like a gossip does LOL.
        Pulling your leg here.

Thanks d a. He said a lot of things. I'm going by the Bible verses on which I've based this poem. Well, the disciples must have heard Him speak in person. I feel that we hear Him 'speak' through our consciences, as it were

Ah a learning experience tucked away in another great construct.

Thanks M. Meanwhile - you got a talking parakeet?! I bet Miss Berles has one.

She sure has along with a dancing paratrooper - can't think of his name but it'll come to me.
