FROM the New World!

Goldfinch60

Why do they do it?

This wonderful piece of music

Is so often mistitled by people!

His ninth symphony,

Dvorak’s last symphony

Is so often called “The New World Symphony”.

It is not called that!

It is entitled “FROM the New World”.

Am I just being a pedant once more,

I don’t think so,

As the music was taken from the new world,

That New world that he travelled.

I do wish people would honour Dvorak,

And call it by the correct name.

“From the New World”.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A pedant I may be but Dvorak's Symphony Number. 9 From the New World Opus. 95 should always be called FROM the New World. One morning some time ago even BBC Radio 3 called it The New World Symphony, I immediately emailed them and the next time they referred to it it was given its correct title. Enjoy the symphony.

And a lovely piece of music it is too. Just a shame it overshadows his other superb works. I'm with you on the title - great write Andy.

    • Goldfinch60

I agree Michael, he has written some wonderful pieces of music, of which I have many.

GOOD AFTERNOON ~ Uncle ANDY thanks for sharing the whole of FROM THE NEW WORLD or as ANGELA would call it DEL MONDO NUEVO ! We need a bit of pedanticism or everythong would decline to TEXTSPEAK ! I have several BEEFS mainly in Science when people on Quiz Shows confuse ELEMENTS & COMPOUNDS ! My biggest beef is with pH ! As you know the *p* notation is employed to turn negative INDICIES into positive INTEGERS ! Our friend *p* is the log (base 10) of the reciprocal ! Consequently pH is the *log (base 10) of the reciprocal of the H+ ion ! One sees hair products labelled as Ph (which is the Phenyl radical - C6H5) neutral or PH (which is the Ordinance Survey symbol for PUBLIC HOUSE !) neutral ! I havent seen *ph* yet ! I teach HAIRDRESSING SCIENCE and I try to impress on the GIRLS the importance of it being *pH* and not Ph or PH ~ OK. Due to medievil use WATER & AIR are often described as important ELEMENTS. People should also note that AIR is a MIXTURE (of gases) and not a COMPOUND ! We live in increasingly sloppy days where nothing is sacred ! I used to work for Chemical Abstracts and being an ORGANIC CHEMIST I gloried in the preciseness and exactness of ORGANIC NOMENCLATURE an exact way of precisely and perfectly maning more than six million componds all containing carbon !

Blessings & Peace to You and Joyce
