THE GREATER GOOD

Michael Edwards

THE GREATER GOOD

We are all free to follow

our own beliefs

but not to impose them

on those who do not

subscribe to our views

no matter how wrong

we may think they are.

With humanist values

or theism teachings

it falls on us all

to lead ethical lives

with respect for each other

and always to aspire

to the greater good.

Respect is very interesting. Should we quietly allow continual praise for all the good an omnipotent deity does whilst that same OMNIPOTENT deity hands out malformed babies, famine, disasterous weather, terrible afflictions, suffering etc etc... 'oh but thats mankind not god'..... its downright insulting to be fed such crap day after day.
Persistence may keep some in the darkness of their narrow minded belief but they deserve as much stick as they get when the foist it upon the rest of us with a 'holier than thou' self righteous stance.

I can understand this dusk, and it's one of the main areas many struggle with - even those with Christian beliefs. If God was not omnipotent, it would be easier to believe in Him maybe. We would say He is not in control of everything, not all-powerful, so there is disease, illness, all sorts of bad things, etc. Some of it is mankind's doing though, I think.

I'm an easy going guy and if others want to believe in what seems to me to be piffle then so be it. Where I do draw the line is where their beliefs stray into bigotry as they did yesterday and, as you say, they try to foist them on everyone else.

So much truth in your words Michael, ethics and respect should be the guides to our lives. Thank you for your fine words.

That's it in a nutshell - thanks Andy.

A good write and pic M. I suppose we don't have to agree with everyone else's beliefs, but we can't force anything on anyone.

And we don't have to try to impose them on others - spot on Orchi.

TOUCHE UNCLE MICHEAL ~ We all have FREE WILL and MPS is a neutral site. Ive cancelled my POST od yesterday because it recieved such a negative BLAST from some (not you !) who seem to believe in NOTHING ! We have many FRIENDS who are HUMANISTS ~ ATHEISTS & MULTIFAITH ! As long as they stand for Positivity & The Greater Good I have no (real) problem with their BELIEFS ! However I can see no GOOD in ANARCHY and those who would destroy everything GOOD and have nothing to put in its place ! Perhaps MPS is NOT the forum for SINGUALAR debate in either POLITICS or RELIGION ! We CERTAINLY are not BIGOTS !

Peace & Joy to you & yours

We're all good friends and it was the tone of the comments in general on both sides of the divide but perhaps I'm just a tad touchy. Will look out the Alligators.

              The simple Mantra
"Do onto others what you'd want others to do onto you"
Should in practice avoid any confrontation
If we could only adhere to it.

              Michael,

First of all, compliments on the painting. I love it!

Regarding your post, thank you for sharing your thoughts! I wholeheartedly agree with Andy!
