Words Do Not Matter.

Goldfinch60

I sing in the choir,

In fact I sing in three choirs.

Why do I do it?

I do it for my enjoyment,

My enjoyment of singing.

It is the music that is sung.

The words may be meaningful.

They could be serious,

They could be light-hearted,

Thy could be religious,

They could be wicked.

But to me the words mean nothing

As the voice is an instrument,

An instrument to create a tune,

It brings the enjoyment of singing.

Singing my heart out

As the joy of music fills me,

Fills my body,

Fills my mind ,

Fills my soul,

As I hope it does for others.

The joy of music means so much,

So much to me,

So much to me in my life.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This came about as there was a feeling that one of the choirs that I am in was getting a bit too religious, this is not so it was just a coincidence that there was more religious music in our coming concert, tonight, than normal.

I struggle with this. I agree that the voice is an instrument but it does articulate words and (religion apart) if the words are silly or nonsense then my practical and logical brain has a problem. If the words are light hearted as in G&S for example then it's okay but when they are presented in all seriousness then I'm afraid I find the music hard to accept. Just me I guess. Great write nonetheless.

A fine write Gold. I try to match the words of my hymn-poems with appropriate tunes, e.g. not 'O praise ye the Lord' with words of Herod's massacre of the little children.
Some may look grumpy singing, but they are focusing and concentrating I think, on the words and the tune.

I'm with you on this Andy the act of singing can be joyful in itself regardless of the outcome

Take Orchi... Couldn't hit a note with a bazooka but I gather he still sings (Only joking Orchi I've heard you have a voice like a songbird)

      Great write

Thanks for sharing UNCLE ANDY ~ You have really touched our Hearts & Minds with this one. Love the VIDEO ! Angela & I can really relate to this one as we are still growing up ! First MARRIAGE & First HOUSE next Year and then (DV) first BABY all sounds like a DREAM ! Singing is so so important. Angela & I both love singing SOLOS ~ DUETS ~ ENSEMBLES and in the CHURCH CHOIR. We do sing in Spanish ~ and other languages in TAIZE ! Last night on *Last Night of the Proms* there was an ORITORIO in a very strange language ~ but for me (BRIAN) it added PATHOS to the PIECE. My COUSIN who was a Choral Scholar sings in about 20 different Languages and contends that the words (whether one understands them or not) are an integral (and important) facet of the VOICE as an INSTRUMENT. G & S is quintisentially ENGLISH and does not translate well ~ to each their own Language. Welsh really is the language of Heaven ~ AMEN

      Thanks for caring & sharing
Blessings & Love to YOU & JOYCE
      Yours ANGELA & BRIAN 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
