Tune: Duke Street
('Fight the good fight')
Psalm 79 v.9-13 part
********
Help us. O God, for you be He
God of our salvation we see
And for your glory, deliver
And on us your graces confer
Purge away all our sins, forgive
Christ our atonement, we shall live
For why should our enemies say
Where is their God, where He today?
Let cries of prisoners come to
You, and their hope now still renew
Preserve those whose time is at hand
To depart from this earthly land
So we your people, we your sheep
Of your pasture, you do us keep
We shall give thanks to you for e'er
Your praise to generations share

Hello Orchidee,
A good write.
Very inspiring.
Keep writing FineB
Thanks Fine.
Good one Orchi, I like the last line of verse two.
Thanks Gold. In the Psalm, that line is in the context of the people's enemies gloating and bragging, and saying 'Where is your God now?' I hope you find Him again?(), or He finds you, or both finding each other, as it were.
Help and hope in everything we do here to prepare for a good death. Yes, a good death: The line “To depart from this earthly land” should grab us all by the shirt sleeve and orientate us in this exact direction - to start preparing for a good death...
Thanks Gary. The Psalm is in the context of Israel's enemies doing terrible things to them. I might only include the 'good' bits of the Psalms. Though one can hardly make a joyful song out of 'happy is he who dashes your little ones against the stones', as Israel wished on their enemies! Yet it seems that even that was less than what their enemies were doing to them.
Atheists go to town with that line of the Psalm, Orchidee (...dashes your little ones) - I saw it quoted a few evenings ago watching the new Netflix series “The Family” by the protagonist who was having doubts.
In some Prayer Books, the 'nasty' bits are put in brackets, tot be optionally sung or said. As if to say 'Oohh, we're a bit embarrassed about those nasty bits'. Yet we know that not every verse of the Psalms is 'meek and mild'.
Amen brother; and God knows it will all be revealed to us when the time is right. This IS living in faith ....
