Tune: Kingsfold
('I heard the voice of Jesus say')
Matthew 27 v.51-56
*******
When Jesus on the cross did die
These signs came by and by
Veil of Temple was rent in two
Like no human could do
Was torn from the top to bottom
And an earthquake awesome
The rocks did split, cleaved asunder
Sights of fear and wonder
And graves were opened, and many
They did arise too, see
After His resurrection they
Arose and went their way
To the holy city (Jerusalem), did show
Themselves, so others know
That faithful saints did live again
For they did appear then
Now at the cross, centurion
Said, Jesus was the Son
Of God truly, for he did see
All that did come to be
The earthquake and all things there done
They feared greatly, the One
Crucified there, our Saviour for
Men, women, children sure

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. 8.6.8.6. metre, picking up some things which Matthew particularly mentions in his Gospel. He speaks of another earthquake too, at Jesus' resurrection.
