He went to New York City
To run the long, long race,
He ran the New York Marathon
At a fast and furious pace.
He finished it in glory
With twenty eight thousand behind him,
He was nearly at the front,
As there were only twenty five thousand,
Twenty five thousand for him to run and beat.

- Comment from author about the poem: A friend of mine went over to New York to watch his son run in the marathon. When he came back I asked him how his son did, very well cam his reply there were 28,000 behind him. But there were also 25,000 in front of him.

cor blimey and now immortalised here.... good on ya both.... I have run two full marathons but never again, I'm sorry to say...
Thanks Neville, I have run to the car on occasion.
snap nowadays....
That was good then - only 25,000 in front of him!
How many were behind us, or in front of us, in 1066?
Oh yes, we would have still been running!
You will never know as you couldn't count above three!
Great write accompanied by the sexiest voice to have ever recorded.
Thank you Michael.
Yes a very sexy voice, I have not heard her for a long time so I looked her up and never realised how many albums she recorded.
Some of her recordings still send shivers down my back - I just never tire of listening to her.

Thank you Brian, I had never heard her sing this song as I always associate it with Frank Sinatra.
I never could run but I could walk well and have walked in charity walks in the past, a long time past.
On one ten mile 'walk' I was told by the organisers that I was the first to finish who had walked it, the few in front of me had run some of the way.
We've nearly won with 1,000 poems milestone - 3 days to go for both of us!
Gosh, that left me of of breath. Nice one and well done...
Thank you Kevin, just go and rest now to get your breath back.
Thnx for a light one, reminds me of the one I did in college, at Hemel Hempstead in sixties
My pleasure Suresh.
Dear Goldfinch60 - this is a very unique poem, it is a thought provoking. It seems like many would run the marathon to be in a first place. But this sounds like he was the winner...Great reading...Thank you...Zuzanna
