Humility Before Honour

orchidee

Tune: St Francis Xavier

('My God, I love thee, not because')

Luke 14 v.7-11

********

Choose not highest place when invite

You receive with delight

To wedding or some noble feast

Take then place which is least

For if in pride or selfishness

You think of others less

Than you in your self-importance

Your end shall be low stance

For host shall come and say to you

This other man do view

He more honourable than you

So take low place, please do

Then shame, embarrassment you know

For you set yourself so

In a high place, now you are seen

By all as a 'has-been'!

If taking low place, host shall say

Friend, go higher this day

Then worship, glory, it shall be

Accounted to you, see

For others there shall recognise

Your honesty, no lies

Your humility, exalted

Now you be, at feast fed

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. metre. The original hymn has the tune name attributed to the author: St Francis Xavier, 16th Century, translated into English 1849. My hymn-poem is rather paraphrased. I'm not keen on being too modern, but 'has-been' seemed to fit and rhyme in verse 4!

Thanks B&A. The title is part of an actual saying Proverbs I think. Woof! Fido said how did you know he was frisky? He must have allowed himself some 'excitement' or 'ardour!'.He's a fine one. lol. And not a has-been, cos he is always famous!

      Orchi,
a little bit of humility would do all of us good once in a while. You made a fine point here, and quite eloquently I must say. Does that sound "British" or not??? ๐Ÿ™‚

      • orchidee

Thanks Fred. Maybe it's a bit 'British', saying 'I must say'. But you did not add 'old chap' or 'tally ho!' (lol). Not as 'British' as 'how spiffing' etc!
