London Winter Walk 2020

FineB

In the Oval Cricket Ground we are all gathered,

Walkers assembled for the London Winter Walk of 2020,

Bleary eyed, half awake at the early start,

Our reasons to compete here are numerous and plenty.

At 1k we are separated by the Eastern or Western Loop routes that we choose to take,

Walking through London, this interesting city and its streets,

Our fitness tested by our endurance & perseverance,

Sustained at the halfway rest stop by drinks, fruits and all types of delicious treats.

The second half of our trek, the finish line draws near,

Our bodies have been challenged and strained,

The London Winter Walk has been an incredible experience through London,

The Oval Cricket Ground at the finish welcomes us - thank god it hadn't rained.

Medals draped round our necks,

A celebratory meal and drinks, we are nourished, sustained and complete,

What walking challenge awaits us in this New Year ahead of us?

For now we'll contemplate, rest and retreat.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Every year I take part in the London Winter Walk a 21 k around London. This year's 21 k took place starting and finishing at London's legendary Oval Cricket Ground. You could choose to walk a Western 21 K route or a Eastern 21 k route. As a West London girl - I chose to go West. Good luck to everyone this year taking part in fitness challenges. I read this morning about a 60 year deaf old woman who became the first deaf person on record to row an ocean by finishing a 3,000-mile journey across the Atlantic. In 49 days she rowed from the Canary Island of La Gomera finally ending up in the Caribbean island of Antigua. Awesome - nothing is impossible if we put our minds to it. Keep writing FineB

It must have been a fine walk FineB - no rain! Glad you enjoyed it.

Before Christmas the son of a friend of mine did the New York Marathon, my friend went over to watch. When his son finished he told his dad that when he finished the race "There were 28,000 people behind me; mind you there were 25,000 ahead of me!"

I made it about 15 and half miles, if 1 km is five-eights of a mile? I worked it out while on a walk that lasted 7 and half miles myself. A motor-cyclist stopped to see if I was OK, as I ran out of pathway on a dangerous road. He was going to walk with me to the next exit, but would have been 20 mins or so, then he would have another 20m ins to return to the lay-by for his motor-bike.
Well, I had stopped earlier to check if a dog was with its master still - yes, as it was rolling over on the grass a few moments later - the dog that is, not its master! So my good deed was repaid maybe.
