THE OXFORD COMMA

Michael Edwards

THE OXFORD COMMA

 For the sake of acuity

to avoid ambiguity

it must be conceded

(‘though not always needed)

when writing out lists

a firm case exists

for which I am gonna

support ‘Oxford Comma’.

When you're driving a car if no other cars are around why bother to indicate? Well I would say, apart from complying with the law, it's a good habit to get into. The same logic, I would argue, applies to the use of the Oxford comma.

A list, is a list, or a list, and a list.
    Or,
A list, is a list, or a list and a list.

A fine write and pic M. Is that the Cambridge comma at 'though (although), or am I just making that up?!
Does such a comma exist? Does Miss Berles know? Is she upset that letters or syllables are omitted, e.g . e'en for even?!

I thought the Cambridge Commer was a car - or is it one car and a van.
      Oh the questions!!

      • orchidee

We must know these things - yes?! To misplace an apostrophe is the end of the world - well, almost! heehee.

I hereby pledge to honour the Oxford comma.

          A better two last lines:
          and I pledge to honour
          the Oxford Comma.

Never was happy with the last line.

          Thanks dusk.

        • ANGELA & BRIAN

BRIAN HERE ~ Bon Soir Mon Oncle Mike ~ love the Goash ~ Jug o* Flowers. Thanks for the Grammar Lesson Mike - but it still need to be explained !

Three European Countries in the EU are:
France, Italy, and Spain (with Oxford Comma ~ second comma)
France, Italy and Spain (without Oxford comma)
Both sentences are acceptable because neither is ambiguous !

It is our Church Mens Breakfast tomorrow so another example:
MENU ~ Bacon and Eggs and Toast ~ This would suggest the
toast is served integral with the B & E and not for Marmalade !
MENU ~ Bacon and Eggs, and Toast ~ with the Oxford comma
indicates the toast is served separate and could be marmaladed ~ OK !
In this case the OXFORD COMMA avoids the ambiguity ~ OK

Thanks for raising ~ American English tends to use the Oxford Comma
which President Trump (USA UBER ALLES) calls the Harvard Comma !

Blessings & Peace to You & Yours
          Love Angela & Brian 💛💛💛

The easiest one I can think of is the following:

I was accompanied by my siblings, Fred and Maud.(Fred and Maud are my siblings names)

I was accompanied by my siblings, Fred, and Maud. ( Fred and Maud were in addition to my siblings)
