The Croquet Myth.

Goldfinch60

On go the clothes

Preparing for the day,

The day when the game,

The game is to be played.

Pants, vest and socks

Go on first,

Then the thick shirt

And the corduroy trousers,

On goes a jumper,

Then a thicker pullover.

Walking socks,

Go over the socks,

Then the thick soled shoes,

And the fur lined coat,

I am ready.

Off I go to that place,

That place that is so meaningful,

Meaningful to me.

I arrive in good time

To that lawn where the rain

Sweeps over it,

In the ever increasing wind.

On go the waterproof coats

And the waterproof trousers.

I am ready,

Ready to play,

To play the game,

The game that has taken me,

Taken me to vibrant pleasure.

There is a rumour,

That beacon of belief,

That croquet can be played,

Be played in the sun,

Where it is so warm

That short sleeved shirts

And short are warn.

But no,

That rumour,

Is surely a myth.

Could you fool the weather? Take a brolly with you, then it may turn out sunny - or at least dry?!

    • Goldfinch60

The brolly I have was given to me in 1988, and all it has done is be moved from car to car as I changed cars - daren't use it!

      • orchidee

You got that brolly used in 1066, or has it crumbled to dust by now?! Was ya partly responsible too? Did ya poke Harold in the eye with your brolly? I gets all the blame, I know. Well, I did tell him to look up. Doh!

Shivering as I take in your descriptive lines of how to get ready for Croquet in winter dear brave Andy - -- (P.S. I hope the floods have veered round your lawn so you wont need a boat to top all those clothes.) Love your sense of fun and thanks too for sharing the wonderful music.

        • Goldfinch60

Thank you Fay. Yes we have been very lucky as the lawn is on what used to be a gravel pit so the water does not lay on the surface.

Aqua croquet, the underwater version.... not a game to be snorkelled at!
Mentally re-writing your piece, wet suit on, flippers a-foot, weight belts donned, face mask jauntily cocked atop your head as you struggle into the heavy scuba gear.

And you're complaining about a spot or two of rain?

P.S. glad you've still got yer legs from yesterday.

          • Goldfinch60

Water Polo with mallets eh? Sounds like fun but not for me - I can't swim.

I never complain about the rain, as the Vicar of Evesham told me once as we were walking in the rain "Skin is waterproof".

You could start a trend of indoor croquet GF.

Sorry SC, that would be for wimps!

GUTEN ABEND ~ Uncle Andy ! We love the VIDEO ! The Moonlight is the only classical piece I mastered on the Piano & Angela adores Elephants ~ she attracts them as much as they attract her. One of her Christmas Presents was spending a Day (in May) with the Elephants in a local ZOO !
CROQUET sure has got under You Mac. Playing in the rain gives it an added Dimension ~ like Golf in the rain ! We have a Monthly Mens Breakfast @ Church (more popular than the Prayer Meeting !) One of the *apres petit dejeuner* activities is CROQUET al fresco ! We do pay in advance (ยฃ5) So we play in the RAIN or lose our fiver ! The rain does slow the ball and hampers the progress of those 75+ ~ BUT we do laff a lot more in the Rain ~ which is good for the Soul !

Blessing & Peace to You & Yours
                Love BRIAN & ANGELA ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค๐Ÿ–ค
