(To be sung to the tune of David Bowie song 'Space Oddity')
(6 bar intro)
ground control to captain Tom
ground control to captain Tom
take your zimmer frame
and pin your medals on
-------
ground control to captain Tom
donations reached thirty million
take a deep breath and may
god's love be with you
-------
5 10 15 20 25 30 ???
-------
this is ground control to captain Tom
you've really made the grade
and the papers want to
know how you got there
now its time to zimmer walk
while we all stare
-------
this is captain Tom to everyone
I'm stepping down my driveway
and i hope to raise a
million more today
I just want to make this virus
go away
--------
for here
am i walking fast as I can
to raise
a bob or two
our planet has the blues
and it's something i can do
--------
instrumental (8 bars)
--------
though ive raised a lot more
than i 'd thought
it somehow counts as nought
when we think of how our
nurses risk so much
tell each one i love them very much
(we know)
------
ground control to captain Tom
your records gone to number one
can you hear me captain Tom
feel the love from everyone
we all love you captain Tom
can you hear..........
------
here am i walking round my garden
each step to save the world
my planet has the blues
so i put on my walking shoes
Captain Tom there isn't a soul in this land who doesn't love you sir!

- Comment from author about the poem: Everyone in U.K. knows this true story of the moment. But for those who havent heard. A 99 year old ex British Army Captain decided he would try to earn some extra money for our National Health Service in this time of corvid-19 virus as our hearts as a nation have gone out once again to our brave health service personnel. He set himself a target that by walking up and down his driveway aided by his walking frame (zimmer frame) for a few days he would try to raise the sum of £1000 by the time of his 100th birthday on 30th April. To date he has raised approx £30million. He made a recording which reached number one in the record sales charts. This is a humble tribute to this wonderful man and i ask any of you who know the David Bowie tune to take a minute or two and sing from your heart for this amazing human being and our wonderful National Health Service and ALL health workers around the world who are on the front line combating this terrible pandemic. I sent a copy to BBC breakfast TV show hoping they would get someone to sing it in the studio.

Andy
Yes, a fine tribute Dusk.
You sure you want me to sing it? You'll bear with my singing just this once?! heehee. Hope it don't frighten away everyone else.
BRIAN HERE - Good Morning DA ! I had thought of doing similar but you cant improve on Perfection ! Love the VIDEO VERSION you chose its very dynamic. Your Poetic tribute to Captain Tom (they should promote him to Major Tom) is very grahic & covers all aspects - Angela & I will sing a Duet to it tonight ! Captain Tom has inspired us all to stop grumbelling about COVID 19 & LOCKDOWN and get out there & do something for the NHS. I have raised a modest sum (in a Collecting Box labelled NHS = Nice Helpful Souls) by shopping & pruning for Pensioners etc. For me as a Scouse exiled in Essex - The recording of *You*ll never walk Alone* with MB & the Nurses Choir - was the icing on Toms 100th Birthday Cake - when it reached *TOP of the POPS* - and still will be on THURSDAY ! Tom has two Guiness Records 1. Highest Sum (£30+ M) raised by an Individual 2. Oldest Person (100) to be *Top of the Pops* beating Tom Jones 68 by 32 years. Capptain Tom still keeps on Walking !
Peace & Joy & Love to You & Yours
BRIAN & ANGELA 🧡🤍💙🤍🧡
He and his brave determination will live in our hearts forever - the nation and world have heard and responded - what a hero !! - - a wonderful read.
What an inspiration and true..
