Playing Fair.

Goldfinch60

A game for gentlemen

Played by hooligans.

You see it so often,

The tug of the shirt,

Tripping others,

Arguing with the ref,

Handling the ball

Then denying it.

Why is football

So full of cheats?

So many fouls.

The refs have no respect,

All argue with the ref.

Why cannot this game,

This game for gentlemen

Be played by gentlemen?

But no,

It’s played by hooligans.

Did the journalist have it right

When he wrote:

“There’s more chance

Of Trump paying his taxes,

Than a footballer

Playing fair with a referee.”

  • Comment from author about the poem: I stopped watching soccer many years ago as it is so full of cheats who do not obey the rules and have no respect for the referee, I read the saying at the end of the poem in the newspaper a couple of days ago and thought I would write this. I have seen boys playing soccer in the street and even they pull at each others shirts.

Dunno about that Trump issue but I agree with everything else you say here ... and where else can ya see 22 prima donnas running around and crying their eyes out if they get tapped or even the slightest knock ... pansies the lot of em and spoilt too .. paid way above what they are worth .. its a game for petes sake ...

    • Goldfinch60

Thank you Neville, totally agree with you.

Footie has been spoiled by all that dirty play..... and it rubs off on society too ..... watching a player who earns hundreds of thousands cheating can give youngsters the cheating ethos...
IF I HAD MY WAY.... i'd send off every fouling player until the fekkers learned not to cheat.

      • Goldfinch60

Yes I too would send off the foulers and also those that argue with the referee, they get sent off in Rugby if they argue with the ref.

I love watching the rugby, especially international games but..... the rules.... i feel like i need a degree in rugby rules to be able to understand them...... do you know the rules?

Or Ken Dodd paying his taxes, when he was here? Of course he sang 'Happiness' while laughing at the taxman! Doh!
Yes, it's tiresome. They are overpaid drama queens. Rugby can be rough, but more sporting it seems.
Well, a blessing in disguise. Some Football Clubs are suffering financially. We wouldn't wish misery on many, but they get paid too much anyway. I don't mean minor leagues, or genuine 'friendlies'.

Thanks Orchi, yes they are seriously overpaid.

And - anyway, we gotta help Branson out, give him our dough! I'm giving 99% of my finances to him now!

As my Dad used to say: 'When money comes in sport goes out'.
Mind you there is often little respect in amateur sport either.

            • Goldfinch60

              Very true nowadays Michael.

Did it start with the football and work it's way out......... or did it start with outside and work it's way into football....... seems like cheating is becoming the norm........ but Trump just got Coronovirus and this may be the turn around we've been waiting for............(Oh don't be silly he'll get away with this too).........

              • Goldfinch60

It seems to be in football mainly, in rugby the referee is always respected otherwise the player gets sent off.

As for trump surely this is "Fake News."
