Kathleen Sings To Me

Goldfinch60

I was sitting in my armchair

Just wondering what music to play,

Then it came to me,

The choice was made.

That voice took me into a new world,

A world that only her voice can take me,

That place where all is so wonderful

As her voice transcends the bad

And fills me with the goodness

She portrays as her voice sails into the ether

Via my heart, mind and soul.

Such  a voice of so much beauty

That I always hold in wonder,

And there we were,

Me sitting in my armchair,

And Kathleen singing to me

  • Comment from author about the poem: When people ask me what my favourite music is I cannot answer it as there is so much that I like so my standard answer is "The piece I am listening to at the moment. If people ask who my favourite singer is it is easy "Kathleen Ferrier" . I have listened to her all my life and the day she died on 8th October 1953 aged 41 a candle was blown out in the world. I have much of her music and listen to her in absolute awe. The recording of this song always brings a lump to my throat.

I took time to listen to this piece. Yes she certainly has an exceptional voice. And this piece took me away to the far west coast of south wales, daydreaming.

May those dreams come true d a.

A fine write and song Gold.
It came to me too. What hymn to include in KP and my wedding? 'Fight the good fight' of course!

      • Goldfinch60

        Thanks Orchi.

You are already married to KP of have you forgotten your wedding day already when I was moaning at you all the time for turning the wine to water!

Oh Andy my parents played her all the time......... I almost used her version of Blow the Winds Southerly but it was so sad (I could see my father while she was singing)..... she's timeless.

        • Goldfinch60

I wondered about your putting "Blow the Wind Southerly" with your poem, I always think of Kathleen singing that song. I play it on the tin whistle and it sounds so lonely when played like that.

          Andy,

I enjoyed listening to Kathleen Ferrier’s rendition of ‘Ombra mai fù’.

          Word painting at its best.

          ‘Per voi risplenda il fato’...
          Let fate shine for you,
          dear Andy.

          Have a wonderful Sunday.

Thankfully her recordings live on - I often listen to her when driving but so distracting - I recently ended with a speeding ticket. Must have been helped along by those southerly winds.

              • Goldfinch60

Those southerly winds can be so enlightening at times that your mind wanders into the world of wonder.
