Remember Me

M.E.M.

What will people remember about me if I die?

One day death will come for me.

What will you recall when I say my final goodbye?

I wish what I was telling you was a lie,

but I won’t be set free.

What will people remember about me if I die?

Does my name make you raise your head high,

and wail to the sky like a banshee?

What will you recall when I say my final goodbye?

The smile I gave you when I was shy,

filled you with so much glee.

What will people remember about me if I die?

The fierceness of my heart that made you sigh,

my love for you is a guarantee.

What will you recall when I say my final goodbye?

I want you to stay strong after I am gone, don’t cry.

For from our love you never did flee.

What will people remember about me if I die?

What will you recall, when I say my final goodbye?

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is in villanelle style. This poem is pretty dark. I see this as a letter a wife wrote to her husband before she died, but she wrote it in past tense. My goal is to make the reader feel sad but also happy. Comments are welcome! Finalized 12-6-2020
