Promise Perfected

Tune: God rest ye merry

('God rest ye merry, gentlemen')

*********

Good Christmas cheer, the Lord is here

He does to us appear

In human form now in His Son

He be the Promised One

The Messiah, the Saviour sure

Saves us from sin e'ermore

Chorus

O praises now to Christ the King

Let all now sing

O praises now to Christ the King

His light does dawn that all may see

And all redeemed may be

He the Dayspring, o'ercomes darkness

Comes unto us to bless

He shall fulfil the prophecies

Made by the prophets these - Chorus

Light of the world, bring peace we pray

In these our troubled days

Spirit reside within hearts, show

More of Christ, may we know

And follow him, empowered by

Your presence, no deny - Chorus

And on through life, your salvation

Hope unto each nation

Sinless One, you the price would pay

For our sins, make the way

Open for us that we may come

To God, there find our home - Chorus

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem - Verses: 8.6.8.6.8.6. Chorus: 8.4.8. there is a comma in the hymn title between 'merry' and 'gentlemen'. They were probably happy, joyful, etc. Not too 'merry' as I was around and added water to their tipples! lol.

So you're the phantom water tipple adder. Not many around - you're on the endangered list.

        Thanks M. Yes lol.

I can sing this one. The subjunctive (or so it appears) verb in "He be the Promised One" forces a reading "though he be" or "if he be" or "that he be" which is I think not what you mean. You really need "is" or perhaps "comes, the Promised One".

Thanks Robert. I suppose I use some poetic licence - writing some things in poetry, that would not be spoken that way in ordinary conversation.
Or it could sound like that dialect again, in some Southern parts of the UK: 'Ooohh, arr, he be going to town today'.
Yet 'be' could also apply uniquely to Christ, I think, as the Eternal One. We can't say that of any ordinary human being though.
