belong

dusk arising

I long to belong,
like people used to belong
before there were cars and
motorways and shopping malls,
i never had that.
Where everyone knew
who you were,
what you were
and you too knew them
for who they are.
I never belonged anyplace.
Never put down roots.
Oh i tried in later life
but in times and places
where roots find hard rock
that slams its door
on strangers.
I romance the idyll of
a cotswold village
with it's own stream
which floods in the rains
and all hands come together
to the rescue.
Just another face in the crowd
a friendly crowd
who know me
and all about me.
Old bones bring out
deep rooted desire
sat here beside
a radiator - the log fire
of a hearts desire.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I arose late this morning, no rush of enthusiasm for another of lockdown\\\'s days, and this piece fell from my mind to fingers with no finesse. i looked for a finer version of the beautiful Sandy Denny song. Many have taken it and none finer than this Judy Collins version to my ear.

Yes, times gone by are only memories now, that you have poetically jolted back to present.

    Yes - good write, Dusk.
MPS is your village (is for me) especially, I would think, during lockdown.
I've moved around a bit over my lifetime so any roots I put down have been relatively shallow. Just not sure that while feeling safe, I could have enjoyed the strictures on behaviour which are an inevitable part of small community life...

I thoroughly enjoyed these words DA .. they sent a shiver down my spine ..

I met with Sandy several times and attended her last live performance at Byfield in Northamptonshire close to where I used to live ..

Wonderful words d a. In these current times people seem to be getting closer together by helping each other, as an old codger many of my neighbours ask if I need any help as I do to them.

Such an emotive read which tugs at the heartstrings - - deep-rooted desires for simple belonging need no modern chaos of noisy life. Love the picture and number too.

I know so much has changed and I seen it change too. If I could have a chance to see the oldie days like the 50's I would, I imagine it was great time to see but I know their we're problems too just like now days with the Covid-19 that without a doubt change so much and perhaps will stay with us for good our future might not be pretty but our goals and dreams will always be beautiful. Great write hun and keep inspiring 🙂
