Kintsugi

Saxon Crow

So how does it happen?
That moment when
You realise there's a stranger
Sleeping in your bed
The person who you thought you knew
Doesn't smile or look at you
And everything becomes an irritation
No matter how hard you try to endure
What is that moment
When everything suddenly changes
And you know that life will never be as it once was?
Or God forbid realise that nothing has actually changed at all
That all the platitudes and decrees of love
Were nothing more than better than being alone
So what happens next
When the heavy truth sinks finally in?
Give it all up and throw it all away?
Or trudge on until the only definite end?
We are nothing if not lamentable creatures
Like the pieces of broken pottery fragile in our repair

  • Comment from author about the poem: Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

But that repair can be so fulfilling and bring back those wonderful memories of our passed lives.

So long as you are both happy to keep using the repaired relationship, it works.
        Compromise saves lives.

Very true Dusk. I guess it depends on what types of character you both are.

Now that’s a deep look at the compromises and ambiguities of a long term relationship, SC. Note you only use ‘love’ once in the whole piece and the whole puts that nebulous term in its place….
          Great write – Respect.

Thanks Dave. Glad you saw it.

Well written, S.C. In the middle of the woods, it doesn't matter which way you go.

As long as its not heading towards the lions and tigers and bears oh my!

              • Jerry Reynolds

That's the risk you took when you went in. The middle of the woods is as lost as you can be; the next step, matters not the direction, is on the way out.
