Doggerel Dave

Notice of absence from Doggerel Dave
Not absent - still here!
Keep Calm and Carry On Poeming. 😂

How do I love thee O Society

Which shelters me from cradle to the grave,

Provides us with lifetime security?

-With warmth and gratitude for all you gave.

The fellowship of humankind, so great

Finally became a cohesive whole;

Large conurbations are cities up late

Evolving into fairgrounds with a soul.

Impostor! thou art an economy

Which ties and hoodwinks me to serve your needs.

Thus I cannot love thee, O perfidy,

I have hard work plus mortgage and this leads

To no less than modern subjugation,

Neutered consumer for the duration…

  • Comment from author about the poem: Form: Sonnet, Shakespearian with a dash of Petrarchan (volta rather than turn) Content: For you to judge….. BTW: The ‘I’ is not me in my current situation – the argument is more generalisable than that.

  • Fay Slimm.

Neutered indeed and an apt word to choose Dave - your sonnet has such a powerful message which I second wholeheartedly. - I too could never love hoodwinking ties.

    • Doggerel Dave

Fay - That was such a quick sharp response - many many thanks. You obviously received the message , so..I suppose, 'nuff said.

Pretty much nailed it there my friend. We are but sheep ruled by wolves

      • Doggerel Dave

Yeh, so it would seem Sax - This was about one class of people (There are others - the homeless , unemployed kept in perpetual poverty) who are too bloody busy trying to keep up they have no time to even analyse their situation and protest.

        • Saxon Crow

Yes. I see the point of the poem. Its very accurate, sadly

I was going to try and pen something humorous .. however, I understand where you are coming from sir and it aint funny, is it ...

I guess it could come under either or both satire and sonnet .. whatever the case, point made ... 🙂

          • Doggerel Dave

            Thanks Neville.
The sonnet – I was scared of the thing until I looked into it; Then –wot? – three quatrains (I was doing q’s before I even knew they had a name), a contrary point of view (oh – that’s going to be hard 😊) and a couplet (‘think I can manage that).
As for the content, well the gloves are off – as I mentioned somewhere above, 30-40 years ago it was easier, more humane for many (if not quite all). At least ‘social justice’ could be on the table in any discussion. Today here, the Public Broadcaster (forget about the others – full of frivolous distractions) tells it – damage to the economy .......index of consumer consumption …..glories on high – housing sales are up up up, record prices….. on and on…..

Very good and clever words Dave, and so true.
Shakespeare will be worried that one day you may write Letham. LOL

            Andy

              Woe is me, Andy Sire
              Is this delirium?
              A predicament dire -
              I know not this Letham.

Neutered, we have all been, willingly, as sheep to the slaughter, falsely believing, it is for our benefit.
                  Loved the poem

                  • Doggerel Dave

I just cannot understand how so many believe they live in 'the best country in the world" when daily they are screwed (and in this instance only I use the term to mean precisely that - could have just as easily used 'nailed'.......) by the State...the whole damn thing.
                    Thanks for that, Suresh.

Here here Dave I echo these sentiments. Well stated in verse. Loved it.

Thanks Soren - one of my better efforts when it comes to where my heart really sits.
