Seige of Beats

Chaylie Rayne

Care to lend me
some of what you hear?
I'd hate to leave this be.
You'd be a dear
to spare of what you will
because I am hard of hearing.

Care to lend me a choice
in the matter of hearing or not?
I wish I had what I needed, a strong voice
that probed me into not thinking I'm a robot.
I want to think everything is alright
And that I can force myself to hear, but I can't.

I don't need your sympathy, your guilt
because this is the real me, for sure.
This is just the way I was built
and, sadly, there is no cure.
I am hard of hearing, and I want to be accepted.
I am trying so hard to be me, and I am proud.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem means so much to me, as I never open up about being hard-of-hearing, including at school or in public. I wanted to share a sort of awareness that people who are hard of hearing or are d/Deaf are not alone in this journey.

You hang in there and be open about it - let no one think you dim because they don't get a good initial response from you.
    And take care of yourself.
